….I’m Andrés Ortiz-Muñoz, a mathematician and theoretical biologist by training, and a dancer and contemplative by practice. My life moves between formal systems and lived experience—between mathematics and movement, logic and intuition, theory and paradox.

Over the years, I’ve found myself drawn to questions that resist easy answers. I’ve explored ideas at the edges of my formal work—blending logic, combinatorics, category theory, computer science, biology, and complex systems. At the same time, I’ve reflected deeply on how those themes intersect with my contemplative life: how the foundations of mathematics touch the ineffable, how paradox lies at the heart of both spiritual practice and formal reasoning, and how mathematics might offer a path to meaning in a world that often offers few satisfying answers.

I’ve been reluctant to share these reflections—partly because my interests stretch across disciplines, and partly because scientific culture often harbors suspicion toward anything resembling spirituality. But I’ve come to believe that these questions are worth holding in the open. I write from a place of sincere inquiry and a deep commitment to intellectual integrity.

Mathematical Koans is a space where I share these reflections—on my own terms, in a form that feels natural to me. Some posts are technical, others philosophical or personal. Occasionally, you may find a short story or an idea-in-progress. The blog moves across fields: from category theory to contemplative practice, from thermodynamics to theology, from the origins of life to sustainable systems. It’s a creative repository for my ongoing attempt to trace the patterns that connect all things.

A bit of background: I completed my Ph.D. in Systems Biology at the California Institute of Technology (2021), and my Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics at the University of Texas at El Paso (2014). After my Ph.D., I was an Omidyar Postdoctoral Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute, where I studied complex biological systems and the mathematics of self-organization. My research focuses on developing mathematical frameworks to understand assembly processes and emergence in biology—drawing on tools from combinatorics, category theory, and statistical physics.

Though I’m not formally trained as a category theorist, categorical thinking has shaped my intellectual world since my undergraduate days. I’m particularly interested in how abstract mathematical frameworks—like category theory and type theory—can support new forms of knowledge representation, and how they might inform not only science but also our ways of thinking about life, meaning, and mind.

Outside of mathematics, I practice various forms of movement meditation, including 5Rhythms, Ecstatic Dance, and Aztec Dance. These embodied practices inform my thinking in subtle but profound ways. They ground me, reveal patterns, and remind me that not all truths are spoken.

A lo largo de los años, me he sentido atraído por preguntas que resisten respuestas fáciles. He explorado ideas en los límites de mi trabajo formal—combinando lógica, combinatoria, teoría de categorías, ciencias de la computación, biología y sistemas complejos. Al mismo tiempo, he reflexionado profundamente sobre cómo estos temas se intersectan con mi vida contemplativa: cómo los fundamentos de las matemáticas tocan lo inefable, cómo la paradoja yace en el corazón tanto de la práctica espiritual como del razonamiento formal, y cómo las matemáticas podrían ofrecer un camino hacia el significado en un mundo que a menudo ofrece pocas respuestas satisfactorias.

He sido reticente a compartir estas reflexiones—en parte porque mis intereses atraviesan diversas disciplinas, y en parte porque la cultura científica a menudo alberga sospechas hacia cualquier cosa que se asemeje a la espiritualidad. Pero he llegado a creer que estas preguntas merecen ser consideradas abiertamente. Escribo desde un lugar de indagación sincera y un profundo compromiso con la integridad intelectual.

Koans Matemáticos es un espacio donde comparto estas reflexiones—en mis propios términos, en una forma que me resulta natural. Algunas publicaciones son técnicas, otras filosóficas o personales. Un poco de mi trayectoria: completé mi doctorado en Biología de Sistemas en el Instituto de Tecnología de California (2021), y mi licenciatura en Matemáticas y Física en la Universidad de Texas en El Paso (2014). Después de mi doctorado, fui Investigador Postdoctoral Omidyar en el Instituto Santa Fe, donde estudié sistemas biológicos complejos y las matemáticas de la auto-organización. Mi investigación se centra en desarrollar marcos matemáticos para entender los procesos de ensamblaje y emergencia en biología—utilizando herramientas de combinatoria, teoría de categorías y física estadística.

Aunque no tengo formación formal como teórico de categorías, el pensamiento categórico ha moldeado mi mundo intelectual desde mis días de pregrado. Estoy particularmente interesado en cómo los marcos matemáticos abstractos—como la teoría de categorías y la teoría de tipos—pueden apoyar nuevas formas de representación del conocimiento, y cómo podrían informar no solo a la ciencia sino también a nuestras formas de pensar sobre la vida, el significado y la mente.

Fuera de las matemáticas, practico varias formas de meditación en movimiento, incluyendo 5Rhythms, Danza Extática y Danza Azteca. Estas prácticas corporales informan mi pensamiento de maneras sutiles pero profundas. Me conectan a tierra, revelan patrones y me recuerdan que no todas las verdades se expresan con palabras.
